Description

Seeds and Soil is the second volume in a seven-part series of modern-day parables, retelling the teachings of Jesus in grounded, everyday settings. These stories don’t preach—they unfold naturally through the lives of recurring characters: Richard, a father and quiet leader; Tom, the steady son; and Larry, the sharp-tongued skeptic whose practicality often overshadows his depth. Together they anchor seven vibrant tales that explore the nature of growth, grace, faith, and the unseen work of God.

Each story in Seeds and Soil is rooted in a different parable, and though each stands alone, together they form a thematic tapestry of what it means to sow, wait, work, and trust.

  1. The Sower
Under the blazing sun of the vineyard, Richard and his crew labor in rocky soil. When a new worker shows up mid-morning and asks for work, Richard gives him a shovel. As they dig and plant, Richard reflects aloud on the strange nature of planting—how some seeds thrive, some wither, some get choked out. The men joke, grumble, and debate. But even as they argue, something deeper is being planted: a quiet truth about how faith spreads, and how not every seed shows results right away.
  2. Wheat and Tares
Richard and his crew discover someone has sabotaged the vineyard by planting weeds—tares—among the grapevines. The crew is furious and wants to rip them out, but Richard counsels patience: let both grow until harvest. A tale about trusting the process even when you can’t sort the good from the bad yet.
  3. Mustard Seed
Larry mocks the planting of a tiny mustard seed, calling it a waste of space. Tom defends it, believing in its potential. Over time, the little plant becomes the tallest in the orchard, offering shade and surprising even its biggest critics. A humorous and heartfelt look at how the smallest things often have the biggest impact.
  4. Growing Seed
In the heat of the day, as the vineyard expands, Tom reflects on how the land changes slowly. Seeds planted in good soil grow at their own pace—without fanfare or visible effort. This meditative story shows that real growth happens beneath the surface, in quiet, patient ways.
  5. Workers in the Vineyard
Richard hires workers at various times throughout the day, from early morning to the final hour before sundown. At day’s end, he pays each the same, provoking outrage from those who worked longest. Richard reminds them they received what they agreed to—and that generosity is his to give. A striking tale of grace that challenges our ideas of fairness.
  6. The Fig Tree
A stubborn fig tree refuses to bear fruit for three years. Larry insists on cutting it down, but Tom pleads for one more year to tend it. Through watering, pruning, and mockery from neighbors, Tom persists. Eventually, the tree blossoms. Mercy, given room to grow, becomes transformation.
  7. The Golden Coins
Mr. Alden entrusts three employees—Marcus, Jenna, and Eli—with gold coins before leaving town. Marcus multiplies his share through bold investments. Jenna takes a steady, careful route. But Eli, paralyzed by fear, buries his in a cookie tin. Upon Alden’s return, the faithful are rewarded, and the fearful face a sobering truth: doing nothing with your gift is its own kind of failure.

Seeds and Soil blends humor, realism, and spiritual reflection in a style both accessible and profound. These are stories for the skeptic and the seeker alike—woven with warmth, honesty, and the occasional laugh-out-loud moment. This is a book about growth in every sense: the kind you see, the kind you miss, and the kind that takes faith to believe in.

Whether you read it alone or aloud, reflect quietly or discuss with others, these modern parables offer fresh soil for ancient truths to take root.

This is Book 2 in a 7-part series. Each volume contains seven unique stories, all grounded in the teachings of Jesus and retold with heart, relevance, and grace.
